Two simple words, “Dentist Appointment”, for some this experience is the stuff of nightmares. We at Chagger Dental fully understand this fear. After all, a visit to the dentist is something outside of people’s comfort zone. It’s not every day you are face to face with a masked stranger poking around in your mouth for up to an hour at a time. For many who suffer from anxiety, this image is enough to send them running for the hills. For others, such as the elderly, or people with different mental health issues, a dentist visit is too much of a stressor. As a result, people who suffer from these fears push off going to the dentist or avoid it all together. We at Chagger Dental value oral health in all our patients. Dental and oral health is just as important as going to your doctor for a regular check-up. At Chagger Dental, we don’t want fear to hold you back from visiting our exceptional team.
With these fears and anxieties in mind, we examined how we can alleviate this tension from our patients. The answer, Sedation Dentistry. What is Sedation Dentistry you might ask. Sedation Dentistry is a variety of sedation options patients can choose from that will either take the edge off any stress you are experiencing, or completely put you to sleep, depending on the level of fear you experience and how in-depth the procedure is. We have all seen the viral videos of patients in their cars on the way home from wisdom teeth procedures still experiencing the effects of the sedation they were given.
There is a misconception about sedation options, in that people feel sedation is only available as a numbing tool for procedures that will be uncomfortable or painful. This is not the case. We at Chagger Dental value our patients mental health just as much as we value their oral health. We understand that to some, dental visits are a real fear. As a result, our sedation options are available for any patient or procedure if the patient feels they simply cannot undergo a dentist visit on their own.
We offer three different sedation options for our patients. The first, and most common is nitrous oxide, affectionately referred to as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide is administered to patients through a face mask placed over their nose and mouth. The gas is then inhaled by the patient, under the supervision of our sedation professionals. Laughing gas is designed to put patients in a dream-like state, while remaining awake. Nitrous oxide helps patients to feel calm and at ease, and not fully aware of their surroundings. As a result, procedures can be complete on anxious, fearful, or otherwise impaired patients without inducing additional stress.
For some, the thought of wearing a mask for a few minutes while nitrous oxide is administered can be too much, or they simply prefer an oral method of sedation. We also offer a sedation pill, taken orally prior to the procedure. The pill, acts much like nitrous oxide, putting patients in a calm, dream-like state while remaining awake. Again, the dental appointment can commence while the patient is still awake, but not fully cognitive, thus eliminating any stresses caused by the appointment or procedure.
Finally, for extreme cases, or in-depth procedures we offer an intravenous sedation choice. The intravenous sedation is administered by our sedation professionals and is designed to put the patient to sleep during their dental appointment. With the intravenous sedation option, patients feel as though they arrive at our dental clinic, blink, and suddenly the appointment is over. Any one of our three sedation options are sure to help any patient suffering from fear, anxiety, stress, or impairment to overcome the obstacle standing in their way of a healthy smile.
All three options do result in compromised cognitive abilities in patients for a period of time. As a result, if choosing a sedation option during an appointment, it is advised that you have someone accompany you to the appointment and drive you home, or escort you home via public transit. Depending on dosage and treatment length, sedation takes a while to completely wear off. It is unsafe for patients to operate a motorized vehicle, or navigate busy city streets on their own after an appointment in which sedation is administered. If you have not made arrangements for someone to escort you home, the appointment will need to be rescheduled.
