Types of Sedation Dentistry
We offer three different sedation options for our patients. The first, and most common is nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide is administered to patients through a face mask placed over their nose and mouth. The gas is then inhaled by the patient, under the supervision of our sedation professionals. Laughing gas is designed to put patients in a dream-like state, while remaining awake. Nitrous oxide helps patients to feel calm and at ease, and not fully aware of their surroundings. As a result, procedures can be complete on anxious or fearful patients without inducing additional stress.
We also offer oral sedation, medication taken orally prior to the procedure. The medication, acts much like nitrous oxide, putting patients in a calm, dream-like state while remaining awake. Again, the dental appointment can commence while the patient is still awake, but not fully cognitive, thus eliminating any stresses caused by the appointment or procedure.
Finally, for extreme cases, or in-depth procedures we offer an intravenous sedation choice. The intravenous sedation is administered by our sedation professionals and is designed to put the patient to sleep during their dental appointment. With the intravenous sedation option, patients feel as though they arrive at our dental clinic, blink, and suddenly the appointment is over. Any one of our three sedation options are sure to help any patient who is fearful, anxious or stressed due to a dental procedure.
Booking Sedation Dentistry
All three options do result in compromised cognitive abilities in patients for a period of time. As a result, when choosing either oral sedation or intravenous sedation option for your appointment, you must have someone accompany you to the appointment and drive you home, or escort you home via public transit. Depending on dosage and treatment length, sedation takes a while to completely wear off. It is unsafe for patients to operate a motorized vehicle, or navigate busy city streets on their own after an appointment in which sedation is administered.
When choosing a method of sedation, it is important to be aware of one benefit of Nitrous Oxide is the ability to drive after it is used for a dental procedure. Nitrous Oxide helps to calm you during the procedure, and you will feel normal again once Oxygen is administered.
