What You Need to Know About Children’s Dentistry

Over the last few decades, Pediatric Dentistry has developed into a more personal experience. By supporting your child’s oral and emotional health, our Pediatric dentists guide both parent and child through each appointment to ensure your experience is as stress-free as possible. We offer various sedation dentistry options.

It is important to bring your child in to be seen by a dentist as soon as possible to ensure healthy teeth and gum formation. Visiting the office prior to the first appointment can help children feel more comfortable with our family dental team. Contact Chagger Dental today to book a new patient appointment with our team.

What is Pediatric Dentistry?

Pediatric dentistry is the branch of dentistry that is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of childhood dental diseases from early childhood until puberty.

The objective of pediatric dentistry treatments is to accompany the growth and development of correct teeth to detect and avoid severe oral problems in adulthood. At this age it is very important to incorporate good health and dental hygiene habits, as well as provide an immediate response to problems that may appear, in many cases regarding temporary dentition, or baby teeth.

Among the diseases and problems that can appear in these stages and that require immediate action, cavities and dental trauma stand out.

The Attitude About Primary Teeth

Historically, most parents, and even a number of dentists, didn’t think baby teeth were of much importance. If a child lost a baby tooth due to wear, decay or other oral hygiene issues it was simply thought the lost baby tooth would naturally be replaced by a healthy adult tooth. This school of thought proved to be detrimental to child development. Studies began to show the maintenance and care of baby teeth had a significant impact on long-term oral health, growth and development.

Pediatric dentists of today now practice all measures available to help children keep their primary teeth as long as nature allows. The health and maintenance of primary teeth prevents long-term issues common in adult teeth. These issues include:

  • Misalignments caused from early loss of primary teeth
  • Decay that spreads to permanent teeth
  • Infections that spread to permanent teeth
  • Gum disease
  • The need for long-term/extensive orthodontic care

These issues can be avoided when making it a priority to visit the dentist with your child within the first few months of their primary teeth arriving.

Paediatric Dental Health Issue Awareness

Parents play an important role in their children and teens dental health education. Educating yourself on common dental emergency situations that arise for children and the proper ways to care for your child’s teeth, are ways to ensure your child develops strong oral hygiene practices early in life that will result in healthy teeth.

In order to develop your child’s smile to its fullest potential, there are a few things parents should know. One of the biggest issues that arise in children dentistry is an ailment known as “baby bottle mouth”. “Baby bottle mouth” is tooth decay that a child develops as a result of teeth’s prolonged exposure to beverages that are high in sugar. This can be juices or sodas in sippy cups in toddlers, or milk or formula in bottles for babies. Using a bottle as a pacifier for your upset baby, or putting your child to bed with a bottle of milk may help them sleep, but the milk then coats the teeth, leaving the residue to causes decay while they sleep. Feeding your child prior to bedtime and rinsing their mouth before sleep will cleanse the mouth of any milk or formula residue. Exercising these preventative dentistry practices will help keep your child’s teeth healthy.

  1. Remember that the office is full of sights, sounds, and smells that the child is not used to. Make sure the office is bright and warm, and don’t be afraid to use toys and drawings in the waiting room to help your child relax.
  2. Be waiting with a smiling face when the child arrives for the appointment. If you are placing instruments or typing on a computer, the patient will not feel welcome.
  3. Ensure that only absolutely necessary instruments and equipment are displayed.
  4. The dental nurse can be of great help while the child receives treatment. You are in an ideal position to congratulate the child on her good behavior. A friendly smile and a calm, caring approach will go a long way.
  5. Give the patient control by establishing a “stop signal,” such as a raised hand.

Don’t forget that parents will have a great influence on the child’s perception of their visit. Try to have them present, but participate discreetly, offering minimal contact during the treatment.
